Sustainable Christmas

Christmas over the years started becoming very consumerist. It’s easy to end up buying useless presents or buying your fifth package of Christmas lights. While we are enjoying holiday season, let’s not forget the impact our Christmas habits can have on the planet. Here are some ideas to help you celebrate the season while caring for the earth: 1. Rent a Christmas tree instead of buying one  You will help not only the environment but also save some money because renting is far cheaper than buying.  2. Reduce usage of holiday lighting  Buy only LED light for your tree and reduce the size of outdoor lightning displays. And let’s not forget to turn off all the lights when you are going to bed.  3. Shop less  While buying presents for your loved ones try to buy smart or maybe look for gifts made from recycled sources. Also, re-gifting has been really underestimated by many people but it’s a great move to create less waste.  4. Prepare less food  Each year holidays create so much food waste.

Future of food

Among climate change, a growing population, and people consuming more of less sustainable food is hard to imagine our future world. By 2050, according to some estimates, the number of people will reach 9.7 billion. That’s why we have to start implementing sustainable food production. As an example of country that managed to apply those changes is the Netherlands, which has become the world’s second produce exporter. Especially their University in Wageningen, specializing in providing new solutions to food supply problem. They managed to produce more food without using more land. Plants grow in tiered shelves inside highly monitored labs. The technology behind these greenhouses allows for an extreme level of control over water, light, temperature and CO2. And, by using artificial intelligence which can learn the behaviors of plants, climate computers can adjust conditions far better than a human. Constant testing by these facilities could be the future of our planet’s sustainable food s

Formafantasma: Cambio

Formafantasma is a studio created by two Italian designers Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin who exhibition is presented in London’s Serpentine Gallery this year. Their work sheds light on the legality and environmental impact of the extraction, production and distribution of wood. Cambio besides of being a small layer of a tree that sits between the bark and the wood, is what helps plants to develop and to change in case of forests climate changes. As the creators say cambio in Italian means a change and so the title is a wish for a change of timber production. The whole exhibition is also designed in a special layout, much like the rings of a tree – the central spaces of the gallery present interviews and research, and two films created by Formafantasma in response to that research. The goal is to inform visitors that for a wooden product to be sustainable, its useful life should be at least as long as the time that it took for the tree to grow. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The 3 R's of environment are an important part of sustainable living, as they help to cut down the amount of waste we have to throw away. They preserve natural resources, landfill space and energy. Starting with reduce, is all about creating less waste. By buying only needed things, choosing products with less packing and looking for items that you can re-use. Then, reuse looks at how can you use items again before replacing them. It forces you to think more than once about your actions towards environmental changes. It’s starts with simple things like using paper bag for shopping rather than plastic one. Lastly, recycle is about making sure you separate items that can be recycled. It’s about learning what products can have a second life and what cannot. All 3 R's are not that hard to implement. All you need is to bring a small change in your daily lifestyle. sources: https://www.thebalancesmb.com/the-3-r-s-reduce-reuse-and-recycle-3157809 https://www.veolia.co.uk/nottinghamshi
